Back in the Saddle

I've been back in Maine for 3 weeks now, and oddly enough at the end of next week the summer quarter will be halfway over already. Working away from all of my favourite people and places is such a challenge, but I think I'm making due. This is my last big chance to explore and experiment before the big push for my thesis project which will be in May of 2011. Sounds far away, but really it isn't that far at all. I will try and remember to update with new work during this chaotic summer art bootcamp.

Reading List (will be growing substantially).

To those that may be interested in what I am currently reading and researching:

Acting Out: Feminist Performances- Lynda Hart and Peggy Phelan
The Symptom of Beauty- Pacteau
Evictions: Art and Spatial Politics- Deutsche

My work tends to focus on pop-culture, suburban boredom, feminism, the body in space, pitfalls of urban living, internal struggle, identity, standards of beauty, irony and comedy so this kind of stuff is like candy to my brain (not really) but you get what I mean. Its helpful to my research.

Commodification and Video as a Medium

I don't want to put full video footage on line because as an artist working with video as (one of) my medium(s), I feel like it needs to be commodified and only seen where, and how I want it to be seen. Working with video as a medium already creates enough of a struggle for artists but, it's important that when we choose to go down that path we are aware of how we want this type of work presented, because youtube vs. a semi-public space (ie gallery) can make a huge difference in how the work is absorbed by viewers and can change the context completely.

That being said, I am working on a new video project.

Happy New Year...

Happy 2010. It's the future, so what now?
Time to start on some new projects...

I have a few ideas that are being developed and hopefully put into practice asap, as I schedule time with new participants, look for the needed materials and do the necessary research. Beyond that I am finally recovered from a bout of bronchitis acquired after standing outside in the cold too long the day after Christmas, at my friends birthday party. I have 2 weeks left in my break before the spring semester starts again. Better get my ass in gear !
