Fitting In

During the first semester @ MECA (Post summer intensive) I worked on one main body of work called the Fitting In Series. It is 5 videos of different sized people fitting into spaces within their domestic environments. The ideas behind this work touch on things like identity, safety and camouflage. I asked that my subjects wear something representative of themselves (and that was comfortable enough to move around in) and that they let me come into their homes to film them. I chose to do this within the home, because it is the space where we feel most comfortable and at ease. I also chose subjects that I have known for a number of years and that feel comfortable enough with me to let me into their homes and to let me film them. In the videos we see how the subjects fit into actual spaces, but in a larger context it is a metaphor for fitting in, generally speaking. How we adjust or contort ourselves to fit in, how we hide from things, how we blend in to feel more at ease, and how sometimes we just will not fit in no matter how hard we try...
